International Translation Day

A language is more than just a collection of words and grammar and syntactic rules for constructing sentences; it is also a massive interconnected system of connotations and cultural allusions, mastering which can take a lifetime. In today’s world, more than 7000 languages are spoken. Each and every one of them contributes to the world’s diversity and beauty.

The process of reworking text from one language into another in order to maintain the original message and communication is known as translation. But, as with everything else, there are various methods of translation, each with its own form and function. Translators, on the other hand, play a vital role in today’s globalized world. While communication is flowing in a heartbeat, it is the job and responsibility of translators to ensure that it is flowing in the appropriate direction and that the message’s precise meaning, intent, and style are preserved.

International Translation Day is a relatively new addition to the world’s calendar of events. And the day is observed to raise awareness about the translation profession and to promote the importance of languages in the development of our society.

In 1953, the International Federation of Translators was formed. The organization was required to select a special date for its professionals. Someone’s feast day was the best alternative. They decided to hold the event in honor of St. Jerome, though the date was not set at the time. As a result, on May 24, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 71/288 on the role of bringing nations closer together and working together, to celebrate the work of language translation professionals which facilitates dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, contributing to the development and strengthening of world peace and security, and declared September 30 as International Translation Day. Every year on September 30th, International Translation Day commemorates St. Jerome, who paved the way for breaking down language barriers. He is also thought to be the patron saint of translators.

Since then, the theme for this day has been chosen to highlight a vital component of languages and translation. “United in translation” is the theme for 2021. This day is marked with a range of activities, seminars, workshops, conferences and symposiums held all around the world.

Translation is about more than just words; it is about what words are about. A translator’s work involves more than just translating words from one language to another. Nobody makes a professional writer by the ability to write a language. Similarly, speaking two languages does not qualify a person to begin as a translator. Years of study and dedication are required for that profession. When it comes to International translation, it has an immense impact on almost every aspect of our lives. It shapes our society, economics, and even our politics, yet many people are unfamiliar with how it works and the processes involved to ensure effective, accurate translation.

Each and every language in our global village contributes to the world’s rich cultural diversity and understanding. There is an old adage, that the loss of a language is more than the loss of words, a loss of unique cultural perspectives and narratives contained within the language and culture, along with its contribution to the richness of diversity. So, International Translation Day makes a significant contribution to the protection of languages from various countries and cultures. And, it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the effort to protect the world through the preservation of languages continues.
