The Most Important Lesson You Will Learn As A Writer

Here is what got me from $1/month to $300+/month in my writing

I have been writing consistently on Medium for 1 year and 3 months. During my short time here, many writers have succeeded while a lot keep struggling.

My case falls somewhere in the middle compared to most writers but I consider myself successful here. Maybe it is because I read a lot of articles about what works on Medium. I am guilty on charges of never skipping a Medium meta article.

But I also never consciously apply 80% of what I read. Part of it is probably because most of these articles sound similar therefore I lowkey roll my eyes while reading most of them.

For the 20% of advice that I end up applying in my writing, most of it has not been helpful still… I can pull out percentages if you want. 80% of the 20% of advice that I apply doesn’t work. But 20% of that 20% advice that I apply is really effective.

Ok enough with the Pareto stuff.

My point here is that a tiny fraction of the advice that I find here is effective. Finding actionable advice on Medium is like searching for a diamond in the rough. There is so much advice that won’t work for you not because it is not good but because it just doesn’t work for you.

The problem arises when writers seeking advice begin doing what I call advice hopping. Simply put, many people keep looking for advice and trying out everything they find whether it works or not.

I know this because I do it sometimes.

Advice hopping made me abandon the strategies that helped me cross my first $300/month mark on Medium. It would have been sad if I didn’t catch myself. But the damage still exists. Because of this, my views have significantly dropped this month and I don’t know whether I will even make the $300 that was my new normal.

I can tell you what my strategies were but I cannot guarantee that they will work for you because like I said, we are different people with different bottlenecks but if you want to know and possibly consider them, these were those strategies.
