Giancarlo Stanton might start the year on the IL continuing his injury trend from last year

After a solid first season with the Yankees when the 2017 NL MVP award winner hit 38 homers and had a slash line of 266/.343/.509 in 2018 while staying in the lineup when there were many injuries around him, he was only able to make 72 plate appearances in his second season in pinstripes. It’s disappointing that he has added yet another to the many he has had, since he is such a force in the middle of the lineup when healthy.

It is is possible that since Grade 1 is the least severe of the strains that he will not be out beyond the first week or two of the season, but you never know with the calf and what it might lead to. He is one of the best hitters in all of baseball when healthy, but he has had a litany of injuries in his career and his been on the injured list a total of six times.

In 2018, when Andujar was 23 years old, Andujar finished 2nd in AL Rookie of the Year voting with a .297 average, .527 slugging percentage, 27 homers, 83 runs scored, 47 doubles and 92 RBI in 149 games.

Andujar, who missed all but 12 games last season due to begin the year on the injured list with a right shoulder strain suffered in spring training and then after going 3–34 after being activated on May 4, he was ruled out for the season in the middle of May after needing surgery on his right shoulder.

His elite offensive rookie season would have been even better overall if not for his weakness playing third base, which is the position he played the whole season and throughout the minors. He had one of the worst advanced stats during his rookie season at third, which has led him to get lots of instruction in the outfield as well as first base in the offseason and during spring training.

On the day that Stanton’s injury was revealed, Andujar made a positive first impression in his first game appearance in the outfield. He was the team’s starting left fielder on Wednesday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The Nationals leadoff hitter Victor Robles hit a shallow pop up and Andujar was able to call off Gleyber Torres to make the catch.

He should get a game appearance at first base soon. He will be able to be very valuable for the Yankees if he can hold his own at in left field, first base in addition to playing DH.

Urshela had a .954 fielding percentage at third in 2019 and turned 20 double plays. Andujar had a .948 fielding percentage at third and only turned six double plays.

Clint Frazier also has an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster with the injury to Stanton. He has talked about the tweaks that he has made to his swing and how he has tried to transform the way the plays defense, which was a major weakness for him last season.

So far in spring training, Frazier is 2–7 with three walks, a homer run and a double.
