They Actually Voted!

What the heroes of 9/11 did, and why it matters

Senator Raphael Warnock, D-GA, quoted June 9, 2021. (Meme created by author)

One of the more stunning revelations to come out of all the remembrances of 9/11 was a statement by Andy Card, former White House Chief of Staff.

Card — who was the man who informed President George W. Bush that a second plane had hit the second tower at the World Trade Center — was talking about what happened on that dreadful day.

As he discussed Flight 93, the plane that would eventually crash in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Card made a statement about how the passengers decided what to do when faced with the facts about their hijacked plane.

“They actually voted,” Card said. The passengers on board the plane voted as to what action to take.

They voted.

Democracy in action. People conclude change is necessary, and they vote on the change they want to see. As in all elections, the results of voting inform us as to what the future holds. Sometimes that means new leadership. Sometimes it means storming a cockpit.

On that day, in September of 2001, those passengers voted in a democratic way to try to save a democratic way of life. Their actions led to that plane being brought down in a field in Pennsylvania instead of a hitting a national target in Washington D.C.

They voted.

And we all have benefited from the outcome of their vote, learning how to stand up and fight terrorism, and not let it beat us.

I can only say that I am glad they weren’t from Texas, or Florida, or Georgia, or any of these other states that are now working to take away a person’s right to vote. Because without their vote on that day, America would have suffered a lot more pain and a lot more death and destruction.

They voted.

We can honor them best by restoring the right to vote to all Americans. We can start by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act as a national law.
