Some basics

With everything going on in the world, and specifically our country, right now reading about religion is somewhat calming. What I really enjoyed about today’s reading was the way that NYE inclusively describes religion. Specifically when he says, “religion is about a way of talking about the world, of perceiving differences and similarities with other types of activities.” I think too often conversations about and surrounding religion are easily escalated because so many people take their religion so personally. I think if more people approached religion from more than one angle we would be able to have more free flowing discussions about different religions as well as different cultures. The fact that religion is such a personal topic for most people is a beautiful thing but because of that closeness a lot of people find it hard to have open dialects surrounding their beliefs. In my opinion, if more people saw and understood NYE’s approach to religion they would be a lot more open to the conversations and far less defensive, which would lead to people having a better understanding of not only the cultures and religions outside of their own but the people around them that are different than them.
