What is it like to be a ceramic major?

Studio art majors have several concentrations to choose from, one of which is ceramics. The ceramics program within the School of Art is a rigorous one, even the department head thinks so. “These students go through a rigorous program the whole time they are at Kent State. The program is difficult but it does have its rewards,” said department head Peter Johnson.

Students admit it is difficult but they also say it is rewarding. Senior Jessica Taylor is the president of the Kent State Ceramics Club. Taylor said her experience being a studio arts major with a concentration in ceramics has given her a new perspective on art. No matter the concentration, studio art majors are required to take drawing and painting. Taylor indicated that she knew ceramics is what she wanted to do, and with having little experience in painting, she was worried and thought about changing her major.

Taylor pushed through her first two years and now solely does her ceramic work, something she loves and says she plans to continue after graduation this spring. Taylor also plans on returning to Kent State to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts, which she will complete within three years.

At the end of each semester, the senior studio art majors who are in pursuit of a BFA put on a BFA Thesis Exhibition. The thesis projects take the students the whole semester to work on and allow the students to showcase their talents during one final show.
